Takes bends as if it were on rails - thanks to its active suspension stabilisers, the ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM reduces the rolling movements of the vehicle and thus ensures greater ride comfort on the roads. When driving off-road, the higher degree of articulation facilitates greater traction.

More comfort, more dynamism, more ground clearance: In combination with the ADS PLUS Adaptive Damping System, the air suspension delivers excellent road roar and tyre vibration characteristics and outstanding driving dynamics to the road or the track. The damping at each wheel adapts instantly to the current driving situation, and can be set for more comfortable or sporty characteristics as required.

The pneumatic all-round self-levelling system keeps the vehicle body level constant, independently of the load it is carrying. In order to increase off-road capability the body can be raised by up to 60 millimetres, and with the optional Off-Road Engineering package by as much as 90 millimetres.This permits a maximum ground clearance of 262 millimetres to be reached.

If great handling dynamic demands are made on the vehicle, as for instance in high-speed curves, the spring rate automatically hardens, reducing roll and pitch movements. At high speeds, the vehicle body is lowered by up to 15 millimetres, reducing wind resistance and further increasing ride stability.

Excellent handling characteristics on each and every ground – the 4MATIC permanent all-wheel system and the AMG sports suspension based on AIRMATIC with ADS PLUS deliver ride comfort and optimum traction both on the road and beyond.

At the heart of the AMG Performance 4MATIC system is a single-stage transfer case with an open planetary gear central differential that ensures rotational speed compensation between the axles. The force distribution of 40 : 60 between front and rear axle guarantees superbly confident, always predictable, handling characteristics.

And the all-wheel drive system does it without recourse to conventional differential locks. The wheels with insufficient grip are braked in a targeted manner while the drive torque transferred to the wheels with sufficient traction is increased. With these rapid, automatic braking impulses virtually the same effect can be achieved as with three differential locks.

This sports suspension system is based on the AIRMATIC package with ADS PLUS including the ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM, which improves driving dynamics together with the suspension and ride comfort both on and off the road. AMG spring struts reduce the roll angle further still and deliver outstanding cornering properties.

The AMG speed-sensitive sports steering with variable steering ratio and direct steering response supports a sporty style of driving. Adjustment of the steering characteristic curve ensures a comfortable, or a comfortable steering feeling according to the suspension setting selected.

The Direct-Steer system adds to the comfort of speed-sensitive power steering with a variable steering ratio dependent on the steering wheel angle. On winding roads this leads e.g. to more agile vehicle response and increases straight-line stability.

Comfortable, sporty, winter-optimised, off-road-capable or entirely individual suspension settings can be easily called up using the DYNAMIC SELECT Controller on the centre console. Parameters such as engine, transmission and steering characteristics are modified in accordance with the drive mode chosen.

The balanced and consumption-optimised "Comfort" setting is active by default whenever the ignition is switched on.

The "Sport" drive mode, with a more direct steering characteristic curve, a sportier damping setting and modified shift points, offers greater agility and dynamism. In conjunction with the AIRMATIC package a tauter damper setting and a sportier setting of the suspension, which is lowered by 15 millimetres, are included.

Drive mode "Slippery" delivers optimised handling on iced-over and snow-covered road surfaces. This is made possible by reduced engine and transmission settings which ensure the best possible propulsion. Improved ESP® regulation and increased metering capability of the drive forces contribute towards greater drive stability.

The "Offroad" and "Offroad+" drive programmes (in conjunction with the Offroad Engineering package) offer optimum settings for off-road operation far off the beaten track.

The "Individual" drive program allows the driver to vary individual parameters at will with complete freedom – from the steering to the drivetrain to the suspension.

For the Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 4MATIC, AMG DYNAMIC SELECT is available, featuring the additional drive programme "Sport+" which further enhances the characteristics of the "Sport" drive programme. The suspension is lowered by 25 millimetres and its setting is especially taut.

The electronically controlled ADS PLUS adaptive damping system provides more driving pleasure and enhanced ride comfort. It continuously and steplessly adjusts its characteristics - from sporty to comfortable - to adapt the damping force at each individual wheel optimally to the current vehicle speed and the condition of the road.

Not available in conjunction with Offroad Engineering package or ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM.

The steering assistance system can intervene to correct oversteering of the vehicle and assist steering when braking on a mixed road surface. If the vehicle is in danger of skidding, it assists the driver in counter-steering back to the right direction.
