4MATIC permanent all-wheel-drive ensures powerful moving off and acceleration – in particular on poor road surfaces and in adverse weather conditions. The system is constantly active and does not require any time to react and intervene immediately. The compact design and intelligent choice of materials mean that there is hardly any increase in weight.

4MATIC all-wheel drive

The 4MATIC all-wheel drive system delivers the optimum traction for each specific driving situation. It prevents disruptions caused by a wet, snow-covered or iced road surface, distributing torque in a ratio of 45 : 55 between the front and rear axle.

ESP® Electronic Stability Program

In critical handling situations the ESP® Electronic Stability Program can keep the vehicle from skidding with targeted brake actuations on individual wheels. The system contributes to significantly reducing lateral offset in strong gusty crosswind conditions.

ESP® reduces the tendency to under or oversteer on bends or in abrupt evasive manoeuvres through targeted brake actuations on individual wheels. In addition, the engine output is adjusted as needed.

A yaw-rate sensor continuously monitors vehicle movement around its vertical axis and ESP® compares the actual values measured with the target value, which is based on the driver's steering input and the vehicle speed. The instant the vehicle deviates from this ideal line, ESP® intervenes by working to counteract any swerving movements as they occur.
